Mary reported The Federation of Genealogical Societies has designated 2003 as the Year of the Volunteer. To commemorate their achievements, a project has been adopted that will be of major help to researchers throughout the country. It is the U. S. Census Verification Project for Federal Census Years 1900-1930, to correctly identify the Enumeration Districts on each roll of microfilm provided by the National Archives and Records Administration. All genealogical societies are encouraged to be part of the project. The FGS Web site will be used as a clearing house.

FGS Forum, publication of the Federation, also has an excellent article on German immigration.

KinTracks reported on the recent workshop by Helen Leary. The August Durham-Orange County Newsletter has an article on the importance of city directories: how to locate and use them for genealogical purposes.

Russell Tyson, program chairman introduced the speaker for the evening: Professor Jonathan Dembo, Head of Special Collections, Joyner Library. He presented information about the 1733 Edward Moseley Map, the 1775 Mouzon Map and provided handouts to help us appreciate the importance of maps. There are several hundred maps within manuscripts all available on line. The library procures maps of particular historical value for use in the Special Collections Room. He invited us to visit Joyner Library to do genealogical research. Copies of maps are also available for purchase through the library.
