Louise Cowell, member, publications committee, said several pages of the Pamlico Memorial Gardens-Oakdale Cemetery Record were returned to Terria for corrections, as were several pages of Cemetery Book A-C.

Ann reported that Deed Book 1 has arrived from Sheridan Books and copies are available for purchase. Copies of the book were presented to John Oden’s mother, Vera Oden and his wife, Janice on 10-5-03. The author, Allen Norris received 5 copies, and Jane Stubbs Bailey received 2. The price is $25.00 which includes shipping and handling.

Evelyn Cutler said the Bible project is off to a slow start. She has received some pages and is reminding everyone to transcribe the information immediately if it is needed and while in the presence of the donor if possible, for accuracy. She said letters will be sent to churches requesting any assistance they can give. For the purpose of this project we’re looking for bibles dated prior to and no later than 1920.

OLD BUSINESS:

The trip to Archives had to be cancelled again – this time hurricane Isabel interfered. We’ll try again in the spring.

The Beaufort-Hyde dinner meeting will be on 10-25-03 at 6:00pm at St. Clair’s Church. Several people signed up for attendance immediately. The call list has been activated. We need the county by 10-20-03. The speaker for the evening will be Elliot Futrell, President, North Carolina Genealogical Society.

Ann issued a personal invitation to all present to attend NCGS meeting and workshop in 7 and 8 November in Zebulon, NC. Christine Rose and Donna Anderson will speak. Donna’s subject will be on preservation of old photos. Brochures with registration information will be placed in the History Room. Chris Oakley said you can also get the necessary information by email – info@ncgenealogy.org.

There was no report from the calendar committee.

Jean Gurkin presented the slate of propose officers for 2004: President-Ann Basnight; Vice president-Terria Baynor; Treasurer-Louise Cowell, Corresponding Secretary-Mary Disharoon, Recording Secretary-Vernetta Lange. Nominations from the floor will be accepted and voting will be done at our next regular meeting on 11-04-03.

Ann mentioned briefly BCGS is considering purchase of a microfilm reader or something suitable as a memorial to John. No decision will be made until it’s fairly certain no more memorials will be received.

NEW BUSINESS:

Ann mentioned the Board of Directors met in August and appointed Vernetta Lange to serve the remainder of John Oden’s tenure for 2003 and 2004.

Nelda Newman presented old deeds to pass and share with all present. In the absence of a scheduled program all 26 present re-introduced themselves, related names they are researching and problems they’ve encountered. It was interesting how many brick walls are being researched. One member mentioned his great, great, great grandfather didn’t exist! He’s been looking for him for 30 years.

Louise Cowell motioned, Elizabeth Elliott seconded to adjourn at 8:20 pm.

Respectfully submitted by Vernetta Lange – Recording Secretary
