Beaufort County Genealogical Society

February Meeting

President – Ann Basnight
Vice-President – Terria Baynor
Treasurer – Louise Cowell
Corresponding Secretary – Mary Disharoon
Recording Secretary – Vernetta Lange

The Beaufort County Genealogical Society met at Brown Library on Feb. 2 at 7 p.m. President Ann Basnight welcomed 15 members.

The minutes of the previous meeting were accepted as read. The treasurer’s report was given.

Mary Disharoon presented numerous newsletters and journals. The Pitt Family Researchers’ move to Sheppard Library is completed. They have added a computer and several programs for genealogical research. She reminded the group of the NCGS conference to be held in Milwaukee, Wis., May 15-18. Information concerning the program and registration may be obtained on the Web at www.ngsgenealogy.org. Or obtain a card from the History Room at Brown.

Disharoon had received two queries: Ron Dailey had requested names of people in the area who have researched the Cutler name. A list was emailed to him. Jo Prytherch seeks information on several Woolards. Zelma Singleton agreed to contact both inquirers to share information.

Basnight called the club’s attention to the BCGS agenda presented to each member present, reflecting the order in which the meetings will be conducted. She also passed survey forms requesting suggestions from each member to obtain ideas for projects and programs the club would like for this year and what committee members might be willing to serve on. The surveys were filled in and left with her. Members not present are invited to call her with specific requests and ideas.

Basnight distributed forms for the United States Federal Census for 1900, 1910, and 1920 she obtained from ancestry.com. Many times copies can’t be made of microfilm work. These forms will aid in recording and collecting the census information.

OLD BUSINESS:

Basnight had spoken with Terria Baynor who advised that the Cemetery Book project is progressing.

John Oden mentioned the 1880 census and farm schedule and the Old Deed Book are still in the works.

NEW BUSINESS:

Basnight related the joint Hyde-Beaufort dinner meeting will be March 16th. Place is undetermined at this time. The speaker will be from the organization providing assistance to Hyde County on its history book.

Robbie Burbage suggested the club get a group together for a trip to the Archives. The club will discuss this again next month if there’s enough interest.

Oden mentioned that he’d obtained a census on CD ROM from the internet for $14. They’re considerably more expensive elsewhere. Type in all census.com.

Louise Cowell had received a query seeking information about an area locally known as Buncombe Township. The inquirer stated it appeared on an 1810 North Carolina census and listed two Samuel Randolphs as the only residents. Oden and Basnight reported that there is or was a Buncombe Hall area in Tyrrell County, not Beaufort. Oden will determine if or where an error has been made, likely on the census record itself.

Judy Guthrie shared a 1700-page book on the Wood family name.

Basnight and Cowell met with NCGS in Elizabeth City recently. They have a summer workshop planned for Aug. 3rd in Salisbury. Mark Lowe will be the speaker. The fall meeting will be Nov. 8th and 9th in Raleigh. The principal will be John Colletta. A workshop is in the planning stages for eastern North Carolina for sometime in 2003. Additional information will be forthcoming on all events.

There will be a BCGS board meeting at 6:15pm on March 3rd prior to the next regular meeting.

Oden moved, Russell Tyson seconded, to adjourn at 7:40pm.

Respectfully submitted by Vernetta Lange – Recording Secretary
