Beaufort County Genealogical Society

February Meeting

President – Ann Basnight
Vice-President – Terria Baynor
Treasurer – Louise Cowel
Corresponding Secretary – Mary Disharoon
Recording Secretary – Vernetta Lange

The Beaufort County Genealogical Society met at Beaufort County Community College on 2-4-03. At 7:00 pm President Basnight welcomed 48 members and guests.

No BCGS business was conducted.

President Basnight introduced Fred Willard, Director, The Lost Colony Center for Science and Research.

As a result of his research he theorizes the English settlers who disappeared from Hatteras Island in the 1500’s traveled west, likely with Indians, through what is now Hyde County, through Pinetown and Free Union area and at least as far west as the Chocowinity area in Beaufort County.

Some familiar names known to have been associated with the settlement are immediately recognized: Buck, Elks, McRoy, Hodges, Padgett, Boston, Sheppard, Sawyer, Pinkham, Gibbs, Brooks, and Barber.

Mr. Willard is engendering interest in the dig/research and appreciates input from locals. A question and answer session followed and refreshments were enjoyed.

NOTE: The January 25 trip to Archives was cancelled because of the snow storm.

Respectfully submitted by Vernetta Lange – Recording Secretary
