The
Beaufort County Genealogical Society met on 6-4-02 at Brown Library. At 7:00 pm President Ann Basnight welcomed
16 members and guests.
The minutes of the
previous meeting were approved and accepted as read. President Basnight gave the treasurer’s report in the absence of
the treasurer.
Mary Disharoon
expressed our sympathy to the Draper family on the passing of Ellie’s mother,
BCGS member DeLora Jackson. Also to
Louise Cowell on the passing of her daughter-in-law, LeAnn.
Mary presented
several newsletters and journals of interest.
The Kintracks Newsletter had an article by Victor Jones concerning
inter-library loans. Mary checked and
Brown Library had such a program.
Contact Librarians for a request form and additional and detailed
information.
She reminded us the
Tyrrell County Heritage Book is available for purchase. Also, the Martin County Cemetery Records,
Volume I is available for $10.00. She
also reminded us of the NCGS workshop to be in Salisbury 8-3-02.
Mary had a packet of
information from Vail Ellis from Marietta, Georgia, containing marriage records
from her father’s journal who had been pastor of the First Christian Church in
Washington from 1909-1915. It included
a picture of Helene Hudnell taken c. 1915.
The records and picture will be retained in BCGS Archives.
She mentioned that as
of 2-02 NGS has made an agreement with St. Louis County Library to lend/check
out their publications. The NGS website
has a listing of publications available for loan.
The Pamteco Tracings
were distributed to those present.
OLD BUSINESS: Terria Baynor was
absent and Ann was unable to present a prepared list of websites. She’ll try to have them by the September
meeting.
John Oden had two of
C. C. Ware’s books on the Church of Christ for perusal.
Ann and Louise
attended the NGS conference in Milwaukee in May. Ann shared brochures and handouts she’d obtained for
distribution. The NGS 100th
conference will be in Pittsburgh, PA in 2003.
Plans for the NCGS 2003 meeting are in progress and tentative plans are
for a nearby location.
NEW BUSINESS: Louis Van Camp is
now collecting pictures and stories related to coastal North and South
Carolina’s railroads, steamboats, plantations, the lumber industry and Civil
War Naval Battles – 1860 to early 1900’s.
Contact him at 975-6364 or email him at louisvc@beaufortco.com if you have old
photos or story information regarding these subjects. You will receive a byline for information and pictures and a free
B&W print of any of your pictures used in the book.
He mentioned that in
researching his mother’s family name of Batts, he found the Olivia Blount
Rainey Library in Raleigh has excellent genealogical resources, including the
1930 census. He found it much less confusing
for research than Archives.
Russell Tyson,
program chairman, has someone from the ECU library scheduled to speak at our
September meeting. He introduced his
nephew Randy Tyson who presented a well received program on the history of
Highland/Scotland military unit outfits, kilts, hats, arms, and bagpipes. He’s self-taught on the pipes and played 3
songs for us. He’s available to play
for weddings, funerals, or other activities where bagpipes are desired.
John moved, Russell
seconded to adjourn at 8:00 pm.
REMEMBER: NO MEETINGS IN JULY AND AUGUST.
