She mentioned a newspaper article that appeared in the WDN during the summer where the Librarian at Brown acknowledged and commended the work of BCGS volunteers in the History Room.

There was a brochure listing Margaret Hofmann’s publications that have been reprinted and available for purchase.

Russell Tyson, program chairman, introduced Maury York, NC Librarian in the Joyner Library at ECU. He familiarized us with many assets of the library. In particular the 3rd floor contains abstracts of public records; family genealogies; microfilm of census records for all 100 counties 1790-1930; newspapers on microfilm; Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps that provide information not found elsewhere; the 1870 census for the entire country on microfilm; 1880 census on CD ROM for the entire country. 4000 maps featuring all 100 counties reflecting cemeteries, houses, churches; 1863 maps reflecting location of homes with family names of same.

The 1930 census is available and it indicates whether the head of the house owned or rented and how much the rent per month was; whether or not he owned a radio; whether he was a veteran. A recent endowment enabled them to order $15000 worth of records for all eastern North Carolina counties. The records include deeds, estate records, wills and court minutes.

The Pitt Co. Digital Tobacco History exhibit has the 1900 Pitt County census which contains the name, occupation, age, and sex of each person. The web page address is www.lib.ecu.edu/exhibits/
