October Meeting

The Beaufort County Genealogical Society met on 10-1-02 at Brown Library.  At 7:05 pm President Ann Basnight welcomed 15 members and guests.

 

Ann thanked Terria for filling in for her last month.  Her husband is now home from the hospital and doing well.  He appreciated the card from BCGS.

 

The minutes of the previous meeting were approved and accepted as read.  The treasurer’s report was given.  Mary Disharoon presented the usual assortment of journals and newsletters.  She had a letter of inquiry from a Mr. Cratch seeking information on Wiley Tuten.  Robbie Burbage will do the research; Louise Cowell will give her a list of BCGS members researching the Tuten name.

 

Mary mentioned that member Diane Mason’s son has been awarded a Fulbright Scholarship for school in Germany.

 

Member Keith Cuthrell’s brother passed away in Florida.  Mary sent a card to the members.

 

The Chauncey Book – Marriages & Deaths from Washington, NC Newspapers 1887-1906 is back from the printer and available for purchase for $20.00 each.  There are 260 pages which includes a full name index.

 

John reported the paper on Blackbeard was published in the NCGS Journal in August.  He is now incorporating the information and reindexing Deed Book #1.  He reported Deed Book #2 is ready to be proofread.  Mary and Vernetta volunteered to start the project.

 

Terria reported the Cemetery Book A-C reindexing is not completed; Judy Guthrie volunteered to assist in order to complete the project and get it ready for the printer.

 

OLD BUSINESS: 

Evelyn Cutler, chairman of the nominating committee, reported the committee recommends we keep the slate of officers and board members we currently have:  President-Ann Basnight; Vice President-Terria Baynor; Treasurer-Louise Cowell; Corresponding Secretary-Mary Disharoon; Recording Secretary-Vernetta Lange; 2 year Board of Director-John Oden.  Dissentions by any current member should be voiced by the next regular meeting.  The floor will be open for nominations.  Voting will take place at the November meeting.

 

Terria moved we postpone the Archives trip until 1-18-03.  Motion was seconded and carried.  Ann will contact Archives to confirm.  Terria will contact Jennifer concerning our meeting in the Deed Room on 1-07-03.

 

NEW BUSINESS: 

Ann reported the joint Beaufort-Hyde Dinner meeting will be held on November 2, 2002 at 6:00pm at St. Clair’s Church.  The call list will be activated and responses needed by 10-26-02.  Mel will cater the meal; members will provide dessert and/or salad.

 

It was decided to put the picture of Helene Hudnell taken c. 1915, that we received several months ago on the BCGS website.  Terria will scan it along with pertinent information.

 

Ann reported Terria will put the BCGS By-laws on the BCGS web site.

 

Ann reported that Louise Cowell, a new NCGS board member, has recently been named membership chairman for that organization.  She said the meeting in Salisbury in August was excellent and members are looking forward to the November meeting in Raleigh on the 8th and 9th.  The Eastern Regional meeting will be held July 19, 2003 in a nearby area.  Helen Leary is scheduled to speak.

 

Judy mentioned she had requested copies of her father’s military records from the records center in St. Louis and was most pleased with the outcome.  She received duplicates of 11 medals he had been awarded during his military career.

 

Mary shared a hilariously written judgment for a man condemned to die in the 1800’s.  It’ll appear in our December journal.

 

Judy motioned, Roger Baynor seconded to adjourn at 8:05pm.
