The
Beaufort County Genealogical Society met at Brown Library on 11-5-02. At 7:00 pm President Ann Basnight welcomed
16 members and guests.
President
Basnight thanked all members who helped with the preparations for the
Beaufort-Hyde dinner meeting on 11-2-02.
Forty-six members and guest enjoyed an excellent meal and
fellowship. The speaker, John Oden,
entertained us with new information on Blackbeard and the earliest settlers in
and around Bath which will be included in Deed Book 1. We look forward to its publication.
The
minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved after a minor
change-John Coletta will not speak at the Eastern Regional, 19 July 2003.
Mary
Disharoon presented a number of journals, newsletters and a query from Larry
Davison, San Angelo, Texas, researching the Linton Family. She also had a letter from member Louis Van
Camp informing us he’s begun collecting information, biographies, and pictures
for a second book on Beaufort County. If
you have information to share contact him at 975-6364.
The
treasurer’s report was given.
OLD BUSINESS:
There were no
nominations from the floor for officers for 2003. Russell Tyson motioned, Billy Singleton seconded, and we accept
the slate as presented. Those present
voted in next year’s officers:
President-Ann Basnight; Vice President-Terria Baynor; Treasurer-Louise
Cowell; Corresponding Secretary-Mary Disharoon; Recording Secretary-Vernetta
Lange. John Oden was re-elected to
serve on the Board of Directors for two (2) years – 2003 and 2004.
President Basnight
reported that the NCDAH will be closed on 18 Jan. 2003. She will check to see if 25 January will be
a good date for our trip to Archives.
Terria Baynor will contact Jennifer at the Register of Deeds Office to
see if 7 Jan 2003 will be a good date for our group to meet there.
Louise Cowell
presented T. Baynor with the BCGS By-Laws on disc to simplify putting them on
the web site: www.ncroots.com/Beaufort/bcgs.htm.
President Basnight
reminded us of the NCGS annual meeting in Raleigh 8 and 9 November. John Coletta and Jeffrey Haines will be
speaking on bringing “Life” to Your Family Histories. She mentioned the Eastern Regional Meeting on 19 July 2003 will
be in Goldsboro. Helen Leary will be
the speaker. Registration information
will be forthcoming.
NEW BUSINESS:
Louise Cowell had a
letter from Nancy Sawyer seeking information on George Walter Sawyer. Basnight will research.
The December meeting
will be essentially a social. Members
are encouraged to attend and bring “goodies”.
T. Baynor mentioned
she has done research on the Hooper Line and has gotten involved in DNA testing
of that line with interesting results.
Russell Tyson
introduced our speaker for the evening – Ann Basnight – who presented an excellent
and informative program on the use of Census Records, utilizing an overhead
projector. She presented and discussed
seven (7) non-population census schedules giving us an overview of what each
schedule provides. If an ancestor
cannot be located on the population schedule he may be found on any one of
these seven. The schedules are on
record at the Archives: Agriculture
Schedule; Defective, Dependent, and Delinquent Classes; Mortality Schedule;
Slave Schedule; Industry and Manufacturing Schedule; Social Statistics Schedule
and 1885 Non-population Schedule for Colorado, Dakota Territory, Florida,
Nebraska and New Mexico Territory.
