President Basnight thanked all members who helped with the preparations for the Beaufort-Hyde dinner meeting on 11-2-02.  Forty-six members and guest enjoyed an excellent meal and fellowship.  The speaker, John Oden, entertained us with new information on Blackbeard and the earliest settlers in and around Bath which will be included in Deed Book 1.  We look forward to its publication.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved after a minor change-John Coletta will not speak at the Eastern Regional, 19 July 2003.

Mary Disharoon presented a number of journals, newsletters and a query from Larry Davison, San Angelo, Texas, researching the Linton Family.  She also had a letter from member Louis Van Camp informing us he’s begun collecting information, biographies, and pictures for a second book on Beaufort County.  If you have information to share contact him at 975-6364.

The treasurer’s report was given.

The December meeting will be essentially a social.  Members are encouraged to attend and bring “goodies”.

T. Baynor mentioned she has done research on the Hooper Line and has gotten involved in DNA testing of that line with interesting results.

Russell Tyson introduced our speaker for the evening – Ann Basnight – who presented an excellent and informative program on the use of Census Records, utilizing an overhead projector.  She presented and discussed seven (7) non-population census schedules giving us an overview of what each schedule provides.  If an ancestor cannot be located on the population schedule he may be found on any one of these seven.  The schedules are on record at the Archives:  Agriculture Schedule; Defective, Dependent, and Delinquent Classes; Mortality Schedule; Slave Schedule; Industry and Manufacturing Schedule; Social Statistics Schedule and 1885 Non-population Schedule for Colorado, Dakota Territory, Florida, Nebraska and New Mexico Territory.
