 by Vernetta Lange, Secretary

April 3, 2001

The Beaufort County Genealogical Society met at Brown Library on April 3, at 7 pm.  President Tyson welcomed 18 members and guests.

The minutes of the previous meeting were accepted as read.  The treasurer’s report was given.

Mary Disharoon presented newsletters and journals of interest.  The Durham-Orange Genealogical Society is presenting a spring workshop---After the Basics---on April 28th at the Chapel Hill Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.  The one-day workshop will demonstrate problem solving that takes the researcher beyond the census records and family bible.  Pre-registration is required by April 18th.  Brochures are in the history room at Brown.  A program featuring “Unexplored Federal Records for African American Genealogical Research,” by Dr. Walter B. Hill Jr., will be presented on Saturday, April 28th, in the Mail Library, The Francis Auditorium in Charlotte.  Registration ends April 25th.  To inquire about same day registration and free parking, call 704-336-2980 or e-mail ncr@plcmc.lib.nc.us.

The Mormon Church has published records from the post-Civil War Freedman’s Bank for newly freed slaves, making ancestral records available for as many as 12 million black Americans.  The compact disk can be obtained from the Latter Day Saints Church Distribution Center, Salt Lake City, Utah.

Disharoon also mentioned Beaufort County Genealogical Society member Esther Radcliff suffered a stroke but is doing well at the present.

Old Business:  Judy Guthrie and Evelyn Cutler met with Julie, the librarian, concerning genealogy compact disks and they mutually decided a subscription to Ancestry.com would provide a greater service that compact disks.  After discussion, John Oden motioned, Louise Cowell seconded, to have the membership provide funds for the program.  It was decided not to subscribe to the program featuring the census records at this time.

Tyson mentioned the Hyde-Beaufort dinner meeting last month was well attended and the programs provided were interesting.

Cowell reported the 1850 Beaufort County Census she’s been working on is at the printers.

Oden mentioned the 1880 Farm Census is temporarily set aside.  He is presently working on the June issue of Pamteco Tracings.

New business:  There was discussion concerning providing instructions and web site information to be available at the computer in the history room.  Oden motioned, Disharoon seconded, for Cutler to purchase and be reimbursed for “Cyndi’s List---The Book.”  It provides a comprehensive list of 40,000 genealogy sites on the internet.

Oden motioned, Lou Ann Cameron seconded, to adjourn at 7:40 pm.  Zelma and Billy Singleton provided refreshments.

Note:  The officers and Board of Directors will meet immediately following the regular meeting on May 1st.
