The Beaufort County Genealogical Society met on 5-1-2001 at Brown Library.  At 7:00 p.m. President Tyson welcomed 23 members.  The minutes of the previous meeting were accepted as read.  The treasurer’s report was given.  Mary Disharoon presented a number of journals and newsletters of interest.  The Friends of the Archives will sponsor a workshop at State Archives in Raleigh on 6-9-2001, entitled “Genealogy in the Electronic Age” and will focus on the use of computers in genealogy.  Registration required by 5-21-2001.  Contact Mary for additional information.  She recently met a gentleman in the History Room doing research on John Lawson.  He can be contacted at www.lawsontrek.com.  Carmen Potter, also a member of UDC is collecting stamps for a veteran’s project.  She welcomes donations.  Frank Shaw in Georgia is collecting stamps for a Leper Colony project.  Call Mary for his address.

President Tyson announced Terria Baynor will be putting the minutes of our monthly meetings on the BCGS website: www.ncroots.com/Beaufort/bcgs.htm

OLD BUSINESS:  Evelyn Cutler presented the copy of “Cydi’s List – The Book” which she obtained from the publisher.  She was reimbursed the $57.95.  She has the school picture project on hold temporarily due to family illness.

NEW BUSINESS:  Ellie Draper issued an invitation to visit the Family History Center during open house at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Greenville from 2-5 p.m., Saturday 5-5-2001.  Brochures are available in the History Room.  Jim Draper mentioned any microfilm available from Utah can be obtained for a nominal user fee.

President Tyson received a call from Leslie House voicing his concerns and objections that some of the Cemetery Records are showing up on the internet.  He never intended for his work to be used in this manner.  Discussion centered around BCGS publishing the records in bound volumes;  the possibility of putting the information on CD Rom;  contacting all cemetery canvassers for permission to publish; and whether to publish in alphabetical order as they presently appear or separate them according to location.  Terria Baynor will contact the state coordinator for NC USGenWeb concerning the removal of the information that has been placed there without permission.  (As of this writing, it has been removed).  Tyson will meet with Mr. House to discuss the further use of his records.

He also related the Sons of the Confederacy recently placed a Civil War memorial in Middletown, Hyde County.

He had a letter from a reader concerned that the year date doesn’t appear in the record of our meetings published in the Washington Daily News.  Points discussed:  Most people who retain newspaper articles record the date and name of the paper.  Newspaper articles are not accepted for research certification.  The records of BCGS meetings are not legal documents nor can they be used for certification, with or without dates.

John Oden said many genealogical CD’s are available on E
