The Beaufort County
Genealogical Society met at Brown Library on Sept. 4th at 7 p.m.,
President Tyson welcomed 24 members and guests.
The
minutes of the May 1st meeting were accepted as read. The treasurer’s report was given. Louise mentioned that the club has sold 55
copies of the Beaufort County 1850 Census.
It’s now available for purchase at $20 by contacting Louise.
Mary
Disharoon presented many publications, newsletters and journals collected over
the summer months. She also presented a
book donated to the club by Mary R. Ulrich entitled “Lives Remembered.” It includes many names familiar to local
residents and will be retained in the club archives. Copies are available for $25, plus postage.
Upcoming
events: Eastern N.C. Digital History
Exhibits to be held on Sept. 20th at East Carolina University. Attendance by invitation only. Pitt County Family Researchers will hold its
annual reunion on Oct. 12th
and 13th at Hooker Memorial Church fellowship hall. Advance reservations needed due to limited
space. PCFR currently moving all
genealogy holdings from Pitt Community College to the Sheppard Memorial
Library.
The
Mid-Atlantic Germainic Society and PA-Palatines to America will co-host their
annual fall meeting on Saturday, Oct. 27th at the Holiday
Inn-Battlefield, Gettysburg, PA.
Registration by Oct. 6th.
The
6th annual Genealogy Fair will be held on Oct. 27th at
the Asheville Mall.
The
North Carolina Genealogical Society will hold its annual meeting and workshop
on Friday evening, Nov. 2nd and Saturday, Nov. 3rd at the
Wake County Commons Building in Raleigh.
Registration deadline Friday, Oct. 19th. Contact Disharoon for additional details and

The
“Washington County North Carolina Cemeteries” Volume 1 Plymouth Township is now
available from Washington County Genealogical Society. Order form and price may be obtained from
Disharoon.
A
new book, “North Carolina Headrights: A List of Names, 1663-1744,” is available
for purchase. Grants of land in
colonial NC were based on the number of persons the grantee brought into the
colony. This method was known as
granting land by “headright.” Those
searching for ancestors who lived in colonial NC will appreciate this
book. It contains over 6,000 names and
very often family relationships are indicated as are the names of slaves and
servants included in the household.

Other
books of interest: A list of about 10
court record, will and deed abstract books from various NC counties have been
reprinted and are available. There are
51 cookbooks featuring recipes, facts, authors’ comments and research notes.
There
are five publications by Frances Holloway Wynne featuring Wake and Durham
County wills, estate settlements, marriage register, federal census and tax
lists.
And
there are seven publications by Elizabeth E. Ross and Ray King featuring
Sampson and Johnston County Records.

Disharoon
hd three email inquiries. One person
was researching the Ratliff name and was forwarded to Esther Radcliffe, BCGS
member in California. The second was
researching the Windley name. Anyone
willing to help or share information contact Disharoon. The third query had to do with adoptions and
was referred to the Register of Deeds.
Old
business: “Cindi’s List---The Book” is
now at the computer in the History Room.
Evelyn Cutler presented the club with a copy of the Old School picture
and history project she put together. A
copy will also be presented to Brown Library.
Louis Van Camp presented BCGS a copy of his new book on Edenton and
Chowan County.
New
business: Van Camp is presently working
on another book on founding families of eastern NC. He would appreciate pictures and biographies that anyone wishes
to share. Contact him at 975-6364.
Ann
Basnight reported Tyrrell County will hold a workshop on Sept. 23 on Tyrell
County family history. Contact Basnight

Tyson reported the joint Beaufort-Hyde dinner meeting will be held on Oct. 6th at 6 pm at the Saint Clair Christian Church (correction-St. Clair Church of Christ) fellowship hall.
