This part of North Carolina is rich in history. The first attempt at settlement was in the early 1580s under a charter by Queen Elizabeth to Sir Walter Raleigh.
This Colony failed, however, and was again attempted by John White in 1587. To these Colonists was born Virginia Dare, the first child to be born in the
New World, by English speaking people. This colony also failed, and apparently was not inhabited again by English peoples until the mid 1600s. For a more comprehensive chronological overview of North Carolina, click here... Please use your browsers back button to return. Enjoy.
