Grimesland Cemetery - GRIMES



Our generous donor: John Bryan Grimes


 

    
     
     The Graveyard is laid out East to West with the entrance through a wrought 
iron fence by a gate in the East end.  There is a large mound at the South 
West corner of the Cemetery outside the fence and the cleared area (about 
25 yards) that is the Grave site of ìWarrenî, General Grimes' horse that he 
used during the majority of the Civil War.

     Note:  This property is private and visitors should obtain permission to 
enter the Cemetery from either Robert Grimes, PO Box 414, Plymouth, NC 
27962; or from John B. Grimes, 10129 Hampton Woods Drive, Fairfax Station, 
VA 22039, (703) 690-1942. well in advance of the date of your intended 
visit.

     Note: Dates in angle-brackets (<>) are interpolated and do not appear 
literally on the markers.

                  away.
      (Nancy's interpolated birth date: 24 Jun 1854.)
      (Note:  10a and 10b are on the same stone and are on the obverse side
      of #7, Bettie.)

 7.   BETTIE, WIFE OF BRYAN GRIMES, JUNR.
      BORN JUNE 25, 1833
      DIED NOV. 7, 1857
      Inscribed:  The ardent heart, the towering mind are fled, yet shall
      undying love still linger with the dead.  No darker hour, hath fate
      for him who mourns, than when the all he loved as dust to dust
      returns and such his lot whom thou has loved and left.  Spirit thus
      early to thy home recalled.

      Inventory note:  Bettie Davis was Bryan Grimes 1st wife.

      DAUGHTER OF BRYAN & NANCY GRIMES who departed this life
      Oct 15, 1822, aged 3 years, 5 months & 5 days

      Inventory Note:  Daughter of Bryan and Nancy, her age was three
      years, not five as reported in other lists, and her interpolated
      birth date is May 10, 1819.  Her name is sometime reported as 
      Zilphia Annove Grimes.
