Notes for WILLIAM LEWIS THOMPSON:

William Lewis is buried along with his wife in the Ussery Cemetery, NC Road #1131. William was moved to the Ussery Cemetery in 1977.

Lewis was staying with his mother, Mary, who was 60 years old and widowed at the time of the 1850 census. He was listed as being 21 years old and a laborer, not married-August 13, 1850.

Betsy was carried to her original burial spot (corner of NC roads 1131 and 1133) in a black buggy drawn by a big high stepping red horse. Lewis was buried at this same spot, where he was found dead. Their grandchildren, children of Richmond Patrick #2 and Susan Ellen, were buried at the same spot sometime between 190 and 1910. In 1977 the Smiths wanted to build a house near this location and they supposedly moved Lewis and Betsy to the Ussery Cemetery on NC Road 1131. They did not know about the grandchildren so no one knows which two bodies were relocated. This spot is very near Stoney Fork Baptist Church.

There are two stories as to how Lewis died.

1. Stopped by Pee Dee on his way back to service in the Confederate Army. He was going to have a

bowie knife made for him. While at Pee Dee he drank some whisky before heading out to his brother's house, William Gilbert. Before arriving at William's house he laid down along side the road, in the woods to sleep off the effects of the whisky. He was bitten by a rattle snake and died. There is also an account that some slaves near this area heard a man scream during the night.

2. Lewis was sold some bad whisky while in Pee Dee and this supposedly killed him.

SEE BETSY'S NOTES FOR ADDITIONAL INFO ON HER.

Notes for ELIZABETH "BETTY" "BETSY" USSERY:

Betsy had red hair and the old folks said that she never got out of "witch weight" which means she never weighed more than 98 pounds.

In her old age she wore a ribbed bill bonnet and smoked a clay pipe with a reed stem.

SEE LEWIS'S NOTES FOR BURIAL DETAILS.

Notes for JOHN WESLEY THOMPSON:

John Wesley is buried in the Ewing Cemetery which is one mile on left, west of Pekin, NC in woods.

The Thompson homeplace was located about two miles south of Exway on left or east side of road. The water at this place was bad, tasted brackish or salty. When soap was used with this water it looked like "clabbered" milk. The homeplace was torn down in 1934.
